This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware figure depicts an English sailor leaning against a stack of cannon barrels, created during the Crimean War period as a patriotic piece. The figure is finished in a glossy white and rich cobalt blue glaze with hand-painted facial features, black hair, and white trousers, and rests upon an inscribed base reading Ready and Willing in golden script. Visible details include a white round hat, neckerchief, belt buckle, and moulded cannon details featuring metal rings and wheels on the stacks. Measuring 27 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the figurine fits comfortably on a mantelpiece or a display shelf in a traditional living room or study.

Staffordshire figures are mid-nineteenth-century British earthenware statuettes produced in Staffordshire potteries, depicting royalty, military heroes, maritime themes, and folklore as accessible domestic mantlepiece decorations.

These figures were press-moulded using earthenware clay, leaving flat backs to sit flush against walls or mantels. They were finished with clear lead glazes and hand-painted with overglaze enamels and occasional gilded details.

Authentic pieces feature soft earthenware bodies, fine glaze crazing, hand-painted polychrome enamels, modest ventilation holes, unpainted backs, and genuine age-related surface wear rather than artificially applied distress marks.

Position the figure on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side console among contemporary design books and modern ceramics to create an intriguing focal point bridging modern and historical design elements.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or lightly damp cloth, avoiding submersions in water or scrubbing with abrasive cleaners, which can dissolve or strip delicate overglaze enamel decoration.
