This large Thepphanom guardian figure, dating from the period around 1930, takes the form of a kneeling Buddha in the traditional Thai style. The sculpture is produced from carved wood with a gilded surface finish, showing traces of red and black lacquer alongside small round glass and mirror studs. The detailed construction incorporates a tall conical headdress, a serene facial expression, intricate floral relief carving, and hands held together in the wai prayer gesture. The piece measures 97 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. In a modern interior, this sculpture suits placement atop a large sideboard or display cabinet as a focal decorative object. The surface exhibits original patination and signs of age from use over the decades. The dynamic kneeling pose is complemented by sweeping arm contours and the tiered structure of the pointed finial crown.

FAQs

In Thai tradition, Thepphanom are celestial guardian angels that descended to Earth to pay homage to the Buddha. They are traditionally depicted kneeling in a respectful wai gesture, representing welcome, devotion, and spiritual protection.

Vintage Thai statues were commonly hand-carved from native hardwoods such as teak. They were subsequently coated with black lacquer and decorated using gold leaf gilding, red mercury pigments, and occasional inset glass embellishments.

Authentic mid-20th-century pieces display age-appropriate surface wear, including craquelure across gilded areas, flaking lacquer, and natural timber shrinkage cracks. Hand-carving tool marks on the underside also distinguish these from modern mass-produced cast replicas.

A large guardian figure serves as a focal point when placed on a sideboard, inside an alcove, or atop a display pedestal. Positioning sculptural Asian artefacts alongside clean, minimalist contemporary furniture highlights their silhouette and textured finish.

Dust the figure gently with a soft, dry artist brush to avoid disturbing fragile gilding or delicate lacquer layers. Maintain a stable environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood expansion and cracking.
