This 1890 Victorian coat and hat stand is a piece made from bentwood and beech with a dark brown finish. It stands on four splayed legs with protective caps, holding a turned central post that rises to a central turned finial, multiple upward-curving upper hooks, lower umbrella support rings, and smaller lower hooks. The structure shows curved steam-bent elements throughout, alongside visible grain and surface texture on the timber. Measuring 206 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 64 cm deep, this vertical accessory fits well beside a front door or in a hallway for everyday storage of coats, hats, and umbrellas in a traditional or period home interior.

Bentwood coat stands were pioneered in the nineteenth century, most notably by Michael Thonet, using a revolutionary process that softened beech wood with steam to mould it into fluid, curved shapes.

Traditional coat stands are constructed primarily from solid beech wood that is steam-bent into shape. The components are secured using internal bolts and threaded dowels to maintain structural integrity while supporting outerwear and umbrellas.

Authentic pieces often feature paper maker labels or stamped branding underneath the frame, along with smooth steam-bent curves free of modern joinery seams. Period-correct metal fixings and natural wood patination also indicate authenticity.

A bentwood hall stand introduces architectural height and warm timber tones to modern entryways or foyers. It functions effectively near front entrances to organize coats, scarves, and walking sticks while maintaining an open floor plan.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent the wood from drying or warping. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of clear beeswax polish will preserve the dark finish.
