A Highly Decorative Pair of Chinese Pottery Buddhist Lions Circa 1900.

An unusual and highly decorative pair of late 19th/early 20th-century Chinese hand-painted and richly glazed pottery Buddhist lions, circa 1900.

Each lion is seated upon an elaborately decorated stepped plinth, the front bearing gilt Chinese character marks. The sides and backs of the plinths are decorated with bamboo and foliage against pale yellow dotted panels, framed by boldly ornamented boarders.

The lions form a true opposing pair, with each facing in the opposite direction and decorated in a contrasting colour palette. One has an open-mouth expression, while its companion has a closed mouth. Both are exceptionally richly decorated in translucent, jewel-like glazes, highlighted with finely painted details and delicate gilding.

A particularly charming and unusual pair, retaining strong colour and decorative presence. Both are in good condition, with some light wear to the gilding commensurate with age.
