A Regency papier-mache wine coaster is a shallow, circular receptacle crafted from compressed paper pulp and lacquer, designed to hold wine bottles or decanters to prevent condensation and drips from damaging dining tables during the early 19th century.

Sheets of paper were layered with paste over moulds, pressed, and heat-cured before being finished with multiple coats of black asphaltum varnish or lacquer, followed by hand-painted gilt decoration.

Authentic Regency papier-mache pieces typically exhibit age-appropriate wear to the base, fine hand-painted gilt motifs such as grapevines or Chinoiserie, a dense felt or wooden underside, and subtle surface crazing within the lacquer.
