These Victorian balance scales, manufactured around 1880 by W. & T. Avery of Birmingham, consist of a substantial adjustable central pillar supporting a pivoting horizontal brass beam with decorative pierced detailing. Twin circular brass pans hang from chain-link suspensions on either side of the beam, and nested counterweights sit inside one pan. The brass possesses a rich mellow patina, and the piece measures 137 cm high, 134.5 cm wide, and 86.5 cm deep. Suitable as an exceptional decorative statement piece in a home, the scales sit effectively on a large sideboard or counter surface in a gentleman's library, study, country house kitchen, or dining room. Their robust Victorian engineering and distinct industrial heritage provide a striking focal point for traditional or eclectic interiors.

Victorian brass balance scales are mechanical measuring devices produced during the nineteenth century, primarily used by merchants, apothecaries, and grocers to determine weight by balancing goods against standardized counterweights.

These instruments were constructed using cast brass components, including a central pillar, a pivoting horizontal cross-beam, and twin suspended brass pans held by linked metal chains.

Authentic Avery scales typically feature stamped maker marks bearing W & T Avery, location stamps indicating Birmingham, and verification marks stamped directly onto the brass beam.

Brass balance scales function as sculptural objects when placed on a sideboard top, kitchen island, or desk, adding historical texture and warm metallic accents to a contemporary room scheme.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying microcrystalline wax to protect the metal without stripping its natural aged patina.
