Pair of Chinese Kangxi Vung Tau Cargo Blue & White Bowls

17th century
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

A pair of Chinese Kangxi blue & white shipwreck blue & white bowls from the Vung Tau Cargo, late 17th Century, of flared form, one with thickly pooled glazed and encrustations to the interior, Bearing 'Vung Tau Cargo' lot stickers from the Christies, Amsterdam auction of April 1992.

The 'VUNG TAU CARGO' was discovered in 1989 by a Vietnamese fisherman on the Southern Coast of Vietnam. The cargo was salvaged by the Vietnam Salvage Corporation and the contents subsequently sold at Christie's Amsterdam in April 1992.

The ship was an Asian trading vessel, dated to circa 1690 during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi. It had been burnt to the waterline as it was bound for Indonesia from China. Batavia (now Jakarta) was the centre of the enormous Dutch East India Company (VOC) where the consignment would have been prepared for an onward voyage to Holland.

5.5cm high, 12.5cm diameter.

Date of Manufacture

Hand of Glory has dated these Kangxi Porcelain Cargo Bowls to the 17th Century.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Original Christie's Vung Tau Cargo label: recovered from a 1690 shipwreck.
Calcified marine shell deposits on the glaze: centuries of seawater immersion.
Roughly pared foot rims with kiln sand: seventeenth-century Chinese export production.
Rapidly painted underglaze cobalt mark in the well: standard Kangxi trade decoration.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of seventeenth century Chinese porcelain bowls from the late Kangxi period comes from the Vung Tau Cargo salvaged from a shipwreck off the southern coast of Vietnam. Each hand-potted vessel displays a flared rim, a raised foot ring, and a pale greenish-white glazed finish with visible marine encrustations, one featuring thickly pooled glaze to the interior. Both bowls bear auction lot stickers from Christie's Amsterdam dating to April 1992, and each measures 5.5 cm in height and 12.5 cm in diameter. These antique items are well suited for display on a bookshelf in a gentleman's library or study within a modern home.

Vung Tau Cargo porcelain refers to Chinese export ceramics recovered from a vessel shipwrecked circa 1690 off the coast of Vietnam during the reign of Emperor Kangxi.

These pieces were crafted from high-fired kaolin clay and painted with cobalt blue underglaze prior to receiving a translucent feldspathic glaze and entering the kiln.

Authentic shipwreck ceramics frequently exhibit historical auction inventory labels, subtle marine accretions, characteristic potting lines, and glaze matting resulting from prolonged seawater submersion.

Display small porcelain bowls on open shelving, accent tables, or within curio cabinets to introduce historical texture and neutral tones to contemporary spaces.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a soft microfibre cloth, strictly avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads that could damage delicate surface glazes.
