During the Regency period in Great Britain, candle tables were small, portable pieces of furniture designed to position single oil lamps or candles closer to readers or needleworkers. Their compact tripod bases allowed them to fit easily into tight spaces alongside larger armchairs.

Authentic Regency candle stands were primarily crafted from solid oak, mahogany, or fruitwood. Construction relies on hand-turned central columns, mortise and tenon joints securing the legs, and occasionally iron sub-plates to reinforce the tripod base.

Authentic pieces display subtle signs of timber shrinkage over time, often making circular tops slightly oval across the grain. Look for hand-turned baluster details, original joinery under the pedestal, and an aged surface patina that cannot be replicated by modern techniques.

A candle table works well in contemporary settings as an occasional drink table beside a sofa, a compact plant stand in a window alcove, or an accent display surface in a hallway or reading corner.

Maintain oak surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually. Keep the piece clear of direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber warp or grain cracking.
