Antique George III Mahogany Cellaret C.1790

18th century
Description

A Georgian mahogany cellaret or cellarette, the hinged lid opening to reveal six bottle divisions, centred to the front by an inlaid lozenge escutcheon above an architectural waist moulding, all raised on square tapered legs and edged with fine boxwood stringing throughout.

Finished across all four elevations to permit free-standing placement, the piece forms a handsome addition to a drawing room or library, also functioning effortlessly as a drinks table or occasional stand.

Very good antique condition, exhibiting a rich polished patina and surface wear consistent with age. The internal softwood bottle divisions show evidence of minor historic, long-inactive woodworm. Structurally sound throughout with an operational lock and key, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1790.

A cellaret, originating in the eighteenth century, is a specialised wooden chest designed to store wine and liquor bottles at room temperature or on ice within dining spaces.

Georgian cellarets were primarily crafted from solid dense mahogany or walnut, often incorporating lead or zinc interior linings alongside brass hardware for locks and handles.

Authentic George III cellarets feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, square tapered legs, original brass or bone escutcheons, and natural age patination beneath the cabinet structure.

An antique cellaret functions effectively as an end table, bedside cabinet, or dedicated spirits storage piece placed within a dining room, library, or hallway niche.

Dust the mahogany surfaces regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply beeswax polish annually while keeping the item clear of direct heat sources and sunlight.
