Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Occasional Table C.1905

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian mahogany occasional table of square form, the top with double boxwood line inlay, a central fan patera and moulded edge, raised on square, tapered legs with continuous stringing, united by a moulded undertier with matching inlaid detail.

Executed in the Sheraton Revival style, the piece draws directly on Thomas Sheraton’s late 18th-century neo-classical aesthetic, combining slender, balanced proportions with precise boxwood inlay executed to the tighter workshop tolerances of the day.

Very good antique condition, displaying a rich original polish and minor surface wear consistent with age. Structurally solid and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1905.

Originating between 1901 and 1910, Edwardian occasional tables are characterised by lighter, more delicate proportions than earlier Victorian furniture, frequently featuring fine marquetry, line inlay, and tapered legs influenced by 18th-century revival styles.

High-grade mahogany served as the primary timber, often accented with boxwood or satinwood line inlay and central marquetry motifs. Construction relied on traditional mortise and tenon joinery, solid timber framing, and decorative veneers applied to upper surfaces.

Authentic pieces display genuine aged patina, natural timber shrinkage along joints, and subtle irregularities in hand-set inlay. Examining the underside reveals period saw marks and structural wear consistent with early 20th-century cabinetmaking.

Position the piece as an accent table beside seating or in an entryway to host a contemporary lamp, ceramics, or books. The deep timber tone provides structural contrast against neutral walls and modern upholstered furniture.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice annually. Keep the table positioned away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to protect the veneer and inlay from movement.
