An Exceptionally Rare Pair of Regency Cast Iron Campana Garden Urns on Original Hollow Plinths
Construction: Monumental heavy-gauge cast iron; handles cast separately and internally bolted. Engineered with a large 3-inch cast central drainage hole to the urn bases, venting directly through the original hollow matching box plinths.
Provenance: Originally from a private historic castle estate in the Nairn region, Scottish Highlands. From my own private collection of 40 years.
Condition: Exceptional architectural state, displaying an unrepeatable, centuries-old flaking paint and heavily oxidized country-house patina. An extraordinary and magnificent pair of Regency-era Scottish architectural cast iron garden urns on their original matching block plinths. Possessing an illustrious castle provenance from the Nairn region of the Scottish Highlands, this pair represents a significant and highly functional survival from the golden age of elite British estate ironwork. Handpicked from my private collection of 40 years, this specific variant features a magnificent scale and specialized horticultural engineering that rarely surfaces on the open market, indicating an exclusive, short-run architectural commission.
Design & Elite Craftsmanship Exhibiting flawless Neo-Classical proportions, the urns feature a squat Campana profile beneath a rigorously defined egg-and-dart moulded rim. The lower portion of the bowl displays crisp, deep reeding terminating in a classical bolection-moulded collar. Crucially for the discerning collector, the magnificent scrolled handles are cast entirely separately and secured via heavy internal bolts to the interior of the bowl—a labour-intensive assembly method that is a definitive hallmark of early 19th-century foundry mastery. Unlike standard interior stove urns adapted for the garden, this pair was explicitly engineered for outdoor use from inception, featuring an integrated 3-inch cast drainage hole designed to allow water to pass seamlessly through the hollow, heavy-gauge plinth pedestals. The mathematical geometry and multi-part assembly method of this pair relate closely to the late 18th-century Neo-Classical pedestal designs executed by Robert Adam for the Carron Foundry, representing a rare, early 19th-century continuation of this legendary architectural tradition.
Patina, Stamp, & Presentation.The urns are presented in their glorious, untouched "estate condition." The heavy, multi-layered flaking white paint has naturally weathered over two centuries to reveal a deep, rich oxidized character. This authentic surface is highly coveted by premier international landscape designers and should remain entirely undisturbed. The plinth rim bears a faint linear foundry stamp partially obscured by two centuries of natural iron scaling and oxidation, showing the distinctive spacing and letter alignment characteristic of the early Carron and Falkirk master-mould transitions
