Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gilt bronze appliques, often referred to as mounts or embellishments, are decorative metalwork elements cast in bronze and finished with a gold layer. Historically popular in 18th and 19th-century French decorative arts, they were applied to furniture, panelling, or walls to add sculptural detail.

These pieces were typically created using the lost-wax casting technique before being hand-chased to define intricate botanical or figurative details. The gilding process traditionally involved fire-gilding or electroplating to achieve a durable gold surface over the dense bronze alloy.

Authentic 19th-century French bronze mounts display crisp hand-chasing, substantial weight, and natural wear or patination on un-gilded reverse sides. Look for maker stamps or foundry marks cast into the metal, along with historic mounting holes or threaded posts.

Gilt bronze appliques can be mounted inside custom shadow boxes as framed tactile wall art or fitted onto contemporary cabinetry to introduce a historic focal point. Combining detailed gilt metalwork against matte, neutral wall surfaces creates a balanced contrast between antique craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain gilt bronze by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent dust build-up in detailed relief areas. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, metal polishes, or moisture, which can strip historic gilding or cause unwanted oxidisation.
