Originating in Staffordshire, England, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these press-moulded earthenware figures were crafted as accessible decorative ornaments for display on mantelpieces and shelves in Victorian homes.

These figures were cast in earthenware clay using two-part moulds, coated with a lead glaze, and accented with applied shredded clay, known as gravelware, to mimic textured coat fur alongside hand-painted enamel facial details.

Authentic pieces generally feature small release firing holes, unglazed flat bases, subtle glaze crazing, hand-painted paint variations, and a lighter weight compared to modern, dense ceramic reproductions.

Arranged as a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf, these ceramic figures introduce historic texture and traditional character to English country and eclectic interior schemes.
