MotifsBurr walnut veneer, Tapered work well, Carved cabriole legs, Turned central stretcher

This Victorian work table is constructed from burr walnut with warm brown timber tones and brass hardware. The piece has a shaped top above a tapered work well, supported by turned columns and carved cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet with brass castors. A turned central stretcher reinforces the lower section, while detailed scroll carving adorns the leg capitals. Measuring 63 cm wide by 47 cm deep and 71 cm high, the table fits into an empty corner of a living room, bedroom or study. It serves as a decorative accent surface while providing concealed storage within the suspended well for sewing supplies, correspondence or small everyday items.

FAQs

A Victorian work table is a specialised piece of occasional furniture designed during the nineteenth century primarily for storing needlework, embroidery, and crafting supplies. Typically featuring a hinged top, internal compartments, and a lower wooden or fabric-lined well, these tables were central to Victorian domestic drawing rooms.

These tables were crafted using hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, frequently accented with decorative burr veneers and inlay work. Construction methods included hand-cut dovetail joints, turned support columns, carved cabriole legs, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-carved details, original iron or brass hardware, and book-matched timber veneers. Inspecting the underside reveals historical wood shrinkage, original drawer construction, and honest wear around the base and feet.

A Victorian work table functions effectively as an accent or side table beside living room seating or positioned within a hallway nook. Its modest scale allows it to incorporate historical character into modern interiors while supplying discreet storage.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct sun exposure and heat sources to prevent veneer movement or fading.
