Antique Georgian Figured Mahogany Three Pedestal 10–12 Seater Dining Table

19th century
Description

A magnificent antique Georgian figured mahogany three pedestal dining table, dating to circa 1800 and displaying exceptional quality throughout.

The impressive rectangular top is crafted from beautifully figured mahogany and formed in three sections, displaying a rich warm colour and superb depth of grain. The exceptional quality of the timber is particularly evident across the expansive polished surface.

The table is supported by three substantial turned pedestal columns, each raised on four elegant splayed and reeded mahogany sabre legs terminating in the original brass cup castors. The three-pedestal construction provides excellent support for a table of this impressive scale while retaining an elegant and beautifully balanced appearance.

At 276 cm long and an unusually generous 148.2 cm wide, the table will comfortably accommodate approximately 10–12 diners depending on the size and style of chairs used. Its exceptional width also provides plenty of space through the centre for serving dishes, flowers and table decoration, making it particularly well suited to entertaining.

The outstanding choice of figured mahogany and quality of craftsmanship suggest this was a high-status piece, very possibly produced by a leading cabinetmaker of the period and potentially made as a private commission.

Condition:

In beautiful original condition with minor age-related marks and wear consistent with age and use. The mahogany retains a magnificent colour and figuring, with the original brass cup castors remaining in place.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed during the 18th and early 19th centuries, a Georgian pedestal dining table features separate table tops supported by single or multiple central columns on splayed legs, allowing flexible seating arrangements.

These tables were typically constructed from dense West Indian or South American mahogany, often featuring figured mahogany veneers, solid timber frames, and brass castor feet.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks underneath, original brass tilt-top clips or brass bearer forks, period-correct brass castors, and natural oxidisation on unvarnished surfaces.

Pair the mahogany dining table with contemporary upholstered chairs or sleek neutral tableware to contrast the rich wood tones and balance traditional and modern aesthetics.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft cloth, applying beeswax along the grain twice yearly, and protecting the timber from direct sunlight, hot items, and high humidity.
