Antique Georgian Figured Mahogany Three Pedestal 10–12 Seater Dining Table

19th century
Description

A magnificent antique Georgian figured mahogany three pedestal dining table, dating to circa 1800 and displaying exceptional quality throughout.

The impressive rectangular top is crafted from beautifully figured mahogany and formed in three sections, displaying a rich warm colour and superb depth of grain. The exceptional quality of the timber is particularly evident across the expansive polished surface.

The table is supported by three substantial turned pedestal columns, each raised on four elegant splayed and reeded mahogany sabre legs terminating in the original brass cup castors. The three-pedestal construction provides excellent support for a table of this impressive scale while retaining an elegant and beautifully balanced appearance.

At 276 cm long and an unusually generous 148.2 cm wide, the table will comfortably accommodate approximately 10–12 diners depending on the size and style of chairs used. Its exceptional width also provides plenty of space through the centre for serving dishes, flowers and table decoration, making it particularly well suited to entertaining.

The outstanding choice of figured mahogany and quality of craftsmanship suggest this was a high-status piece, very possibly produced by a leading cabinetmaker of the period and potentially made as a private commission.

Condition:

In beautiful original condition with minor age-related marks and wear consistent with age and use. The mahogany retains a magnificent colour and figuring, with the original brass cup castors remaining in place.

This antique Georgian dining table dates to circa 1800 and is made from figured mahogany with a deep brown polished finish. The rectangular top is formed in three sections, supported by three turned pedestal columns. Each pedestal is raised on four splayed and reeded sabre legs with original brass cup castors and brass hardware. Minor age-related marks and wear are present on the expansive surface. The table measures 71.5 cm high, 148.2 cm wide, and 276 cm deep. Designed to seat 10 to 12 people comfortably, the generous width leaves ample room down the centre for serving dishes, floral arrangements, and table decorations. It functions as a formal dining table in a large dining room or banqueting space for hosting family dinners and dinner parties.

Pedestal dining tables gained popularity in the late 18th century during the Georgian period. They were designed with central turned columns and splayed legs to maximize legroom for sitters compared to traditional corner-legged tables.

High-grade dense mahogany, including Cuban and figured timber veneers, served as the primary wood. Structural joinery often utilized oak or pine as secondary timbers, fitted with solid brass castors and metal brass clips.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed undersides, hand-cut joinery, original brass leaf clips or fork connectors, and age-appropriate wear or patination on the brass cap castors and mahogany supports.

To integrate a large period dining table into contemporary spaces, pair it with modern upholstered chairs or minimalist pendant lighting to create an intentional contrast between historical timber and modern lines.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste periodically along the grain. Keep the table positioned away from direct radiators and prolonged sunlight to prevent veneer movement or fading.
