18th Century Carved Oak Solomonic Pedestal Column

18th century
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

An impressive 18th Century large-scale carved oak pedestal column. The main column features a dramatic Solomonic twist, intricately carved in high relief with scrolling fruiting vines, grape clusters, and detailed foliage.

It is crowned with an acanthus leaf-carved capital beneath a shaped top section, resting upon a substantial, stepped plinth base. Displaying a rich, dark patina throughout, this imposing piece offers a good height and presence, making it ideal for displaying large bronzes, busts, decorative ceramics, or functioning as a standalone statement piece.

Condition: Very good antique condition showing light historic marks, wear, and surface variation appropriate for its age. The top capital plate and the stepped base section are later additions, creating a solid and stable decorative pedestal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Solomonic column, also called a barley-twist column, is a corkscrew-shaped helical shaft characteristic of Baroque architecture and decorative arts. The design draws inspiration from classical Roman columns believed to have originated from the Temple of Solomon.

During the 18th century, pedestals were primarily carved from dense hardwoods such as European oak, walnut, or mahogany. Solid timber was hand-carved using traditional gouges and chisels before being finished with dark stain and beeswax.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-tooling marks, slight asymmetry from manual carving, and deep wax patination built up over centuries. Timber shrinkage over time often creates subtle hairline fractures or irregular circular profiles near the base and capital.

A carved wooden pedestal serves as an elevated platform for contemporary bronze sculptures, plaster busts, or stoneware ceramics. Positioning the column alongside minimal modern furniture creates an engaging textural contrast within contemporary living spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, using a natural-bristle brush to reach detailed relief carvings. Apply a high-grade clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber moisture, avoiding chemical solvents or direct heat sources.
