Description

A rare and visually striking late-18th-century teapot, most probably English and made circa 1770–1785. The unmarked body appears to be creamware or an early china-glazed refined earthenware rather than hard-paste porcelain. A specific factory cannot presently be assigned.

The teapot has a balanced globular body raised on a low circular foot, a tall cylindrical neck, a domed cover with an elongated pear- or drop-shaped finial, and a high rounded loop handle rising approximately to the level of the cover.

The strongly curved ascending spout is particularly distinctive. Its junction with the body is strengthened and ornamented with unusual moulded foliate and scroll decoration. This feature is absent from the closest presently known comparison and considerably enhances the sculptural character and rarity of the present example.

Both sides are freely hand-painted in polychrome overglaze enamels with chinoiserie figures in fenced garden landscapes. The palette includes iron red, puce, yellow, green, blue and black, with flowering branches, fruit, stylised vegetation and energetic landscape strokes. The cover is decorated with flowers and sweeping coloured motifs.

A closely comparable 16.5 cm globular teapot, sharing the tall neck, curved spout, high loop handle, pointed finial and related polychrome chinoiserie decoration, has been catalogued by Moorabool Antique Galleries as pearlware, circa 1760. The present teapot differs principally in having the considerably rarer moulded foliate decoration at the base of its spout.

Condition:

The upper section of the handle has been professionally reattached. There is a small loss to the glaze or enamel at the lip of the spout. The cover has a fine hairline crack visible from the interior. Its rim has undergone an old, apparently professional restoration with associated repainting. Fine glaze crazing, kiln speckling, staining and surface wear consistent with age are present.
