Antique Edwardian Industrial Mill Bin C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian vulcanised fibre textile mill bin, the deep oxblood red panels feature a solid hardwood collar rim fitted with pressed metal corner brackets, with two flush-set oval handles framed with pressed-brass protective bezels to the sides. The piece bears the original time-worn, elaborate, distinctively Edwardian lithographic decal for The Walrus Fibre Manufacturing Company of Rochdale.

Manufactured from chemically hardened cotton cellulose, the pre-war specification is elevated by pressed brass handle trims fitted prior to First World War non-ferrous metal rationing. Its deep, upright square footprint provides a stable form particularly suited to holding logs beside a hearth.

Very good antique condition, displaying light surface scuffing and historic rubbing to the decal and walls consistent with age and commercial use. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1910.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian industrial mill bin is a utilitarian storage container produced around the turn of the 20th century, primarily used within British textile mills and factories to transport wool, cotton, or raw materials.

These containers were typically manufactured using vulcanised fibreboarda hardened cellulose materialreinforced with steel or iron riveted edging and capped with a protective timber rim.

Authentic pieces feature original riveted construction, natural surface wear, pressed metal corner reinforcements, and occasionally original manufacturer labels or printed mill stencils.

These bins serve as functional accent pieces in modern spaces, commonly used as log baskets beside a fireplace, laundry containers, or storage for rolled textiles.

Keep the piece in a dry environment to prevent the fibreboard from softening or warping, and dust gently with a clean microfibre cloth without applying water or chemical cleaners.
