Cloverleaf Home Interiors has dated this George II Oak Lowboy to the 18th Century.
The table has a superb two-plank quarter-sawn oak top, with particularly striking medullary rays running through the grain – a wonderful feature that gives the timber tremendous depth and character.
Of particular interest are the rare exposed dovetail joints, an unusual and fascinating constructional detail that will appeal to the serious collector and connoisseur of early English furniture.
Below is a single drawer with a finely stepped thumb-moulded edge, retaining the restrained elegance associated with the George II period.
The table stands beautifully on elegant cabriole legs, with bold, well-defined knees terminating in particularly distinctive pointed feet. The combination gives the table a wonderfully confident and sculptural profile.
Most importantly, the oak has developed a fantastic rich colour and deep, naturally aged patina, giving the piece the presence that can only be achieved through nearly three centuries of age and careful use.
