Victorian Staffordshire Earthenware Christ at the Column, C.1860

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A large Victorian Staffordshire glazed earthenware figure of Christ at the Column, made in England circa 1860. The subject is traditionally known as The Flagellation or Christ at the Pillar and forms part of the Passion of Christ.

Christ is modelled standing beside a tall rectangular column with his head inclined and his hands bound behind his back. The figure is fully modelled in the round, with carefully defined modelling of the body and limbs.

The figure stands on a substantial shaped base decorated at the front with a large shell motif and scrolling rocaille ornament. A firing vent at the rear of the hollow column reflects the traditional construction of large Staffordshire earthenware figures.

The model is documented in A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835–1875, Book 2, p. 22, fig. 1699, where the subject is identified as The Flagellation of Christ. Closely related monumental examples are known from specialist collections of Victorian religious Staffordshire, including the Stephen Duckworth Collection, part of which is now held by The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire and the Potteries around Stoke-on-Trent became internationally renowned as one of the principal centres of British ceramic production. The district produced many of the leading names in English pottery and developed a particularly distinctive tradition of Victorian figural wares.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Staffordshire religious figure is a press-moulded earthenware statue produced by potteries in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century, designed to depict biblical iconography for household devotional display.

These figures were cast in ceramic moulds using lead-glazed earthenware, fired, and finished with underglaze slip or overglaze painted enamels before a final kiln firing.

Authentic period pieces display fine surface crazing in the clear glaze, unglazed firing bases, light weight relative to modern reproductions, and mold seam marks consistent with hand assembly.

They can be integrated into minimalist shelving units, positioned alongside architectural ceramics, or placed on dark timber surfaces to serve as historical sculptural accents.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water immersion or abrasive detergents that can damage lead glazes and delicate paint pigments.
