Satinwood Card Table Circa 1790

18th century
Description

A beautiful satinwood card table circa 1790 with rosewood and boxwood crossbanding and stringing. The back legs fold out to support the table top when open. An unusual feature is that the table has been designed so that when closed there is a half inch overhang at the front which makes it easier to open. The back of the table is also veneered and has ebony stringing - a sure sign of quality.

With the lovely warm colour and grain of the satinwood this is a striking table of the utmost quality.

Height - 74cm / 29"

Width - 92cm / 36.2"

Depth (open) - 90.5cm / 35.5"

Depth (closed) - 46cm / 18"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the George III era, these tables feature fold-over tops that open to support card games, often shaped in a demilune format to serve as wall consoles when closed.

Cabinetmakers favoured exotic timbers such as West Indian satinwood, often decorated with ebony stringing, tulipwood crossbanding, and fitted with brass hinges.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetails, original gate-leg mechanisms, square tapered legs, and subtle hand-planed secondary timbers underneath.

Positioned against an entryway wall or behind a sofa, a demilune table functions as a slender console for displaying lamps, ceramics, or artwork.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent fading, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax sparingly once or twice a year.
