This beautiful and very attractive French gilt bronze centrepiece tray features an ornate handle with acanthus leaf detail and a white onyx plate surrounded with a detailed floral design in Champleve enamel. The dish has a scalloped rim and rests on 4 paw feet. This dainty centrepiece would a make a fine addition to a wide range of rooms and settings.

Champleve is an enamelling technique where troughs or cells are carved, cast, or etched into the surface of a metal object and filled with vitreous enamel paste. The piece is then fired and polished smooth, a process popularised in Europe during the 19th century for fine decorative objects.

Nineteenth-century French centrepieces frequently combined cast gilt bronze, or ormolu, with champleve enamel and polished hardstones such as onyx or marble. The metalwork provided structural framework and ornate detailing, while the enamel added vibrant colour and intricate patterns.

Authentic antique champleve pieces show fine, precise metal cell walls dividing the coloured enamel sections, accompanied by hand-chased or cast gilt bronze mounts. Genuine 19th-century examples often exhibit slight surface irregularities, natural gilding wear, and heavy, solid bronze or brass casting.
