Georgian Walnut Side Table

Description

A small proportioned George II figured walnut three drawer side table with crossbanded top and original brass fittings c.1750. Quarter veneered figured walnut top with broad crossbanding and moulded outer edge. Two small drawers sat over one full width drawer; each drawer with figured veneers, moulded edge to match the top and original brass swan neck fittings. The legs with moulded outer corner and chamfered inner profile, along with small corbels set to the front below the drawers. Presented in excellent original condition with a rich colour and polish. Georgian walnut side tables, often referred to as lowboys, were prominent during the 18th century. They typically feature figured walnut or burr walnut veneers, brass swan-neck handles, and a configuration of multiple drawers supported by tapered or cabriole legs.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid walnut and burr walnut veneers laid over secondary timbers such as oak or pine. Hardware usually consisted of cast brass drop handles with decorative backplates and iron or steel drawer locks.
