This Georgian bedside table dates from circa 1800 and is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown finish. The upper section comprises a raised gallery shelf with shaped side panels, surmounting an open tier and a single drawer fitted with brass ring pulls and a central classical brass mount. Below the drawer, slender legs connect via an X-shaped cross stretcher. Standing at a height of 103 cm, a width of 56 cm, and a depth of 39 cm, the piece has a compact footprint. Originally designed for the bedroom, this occasional table functions well in various rooms around the home today. It serves as a practical surface for a bedside lamp, a telephone, or decorative items, while the lower shelf and drawer provide storage for books and small essentials. The timber displays natural grain patterns and warm tones suited to traditional and period interiors.

FAQs

Bedside tables from the late Georgian and Regency eras, around 1800, were often crafted as multi-tiered nightstands or washstands. They featured functional open shelving, fine flame mahogany veneers, delicate hand-carved details, and architectural leg stretchers.

Tables from this era were primarily constructed using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over oak or pine drawer linings. Cast brass hardware, keyhole escutcheons, and ornate brass decorative mounts were standard fittings.

Authentic pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-sawn secondary woods, natural shrinkage marks, and original brass fittings with age-appropriate patination and cast details.

Position the piece alongside a upholstered modern bed to create a balanced contrast of textures, or place it in a reading nook to display books and ceramic table lamps.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
