19th-century Cast-iron Signal Mortar on Oak Carriage

19th century
Description

A characterful 19th-century cast-iron signal mortar, the substantial ring-turned barrel mounted at an inclined angle upon a solid oak carriage. The timber base is fitted with decorative brass carrying handles, retaining chains and ornamental brass mounts.

The ironwork has developed a dark, aged patina, complemented by the warm colour and natural wear of the oak. Originally intended for signalling or ceremonial use, it now makes an unusual decorative or collectors’ piece.

The mortar has not been tested, and the bore appears to have been blocked or deactivated. It is offered strictly as a decorative antique.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Signal mortars were compact artillery pieces designed to produce a loud detonation without firing a heavy projectile. They were primarily utilised on ships and coastal stations to signal fog warnings, start yacht races, or sound alarms.

These objects generally consist of a heavy cast-iron or bronze barrel set into a solid wooden carriage, often made from durable oak or mahogany. Brass or iron mounts, chains, and side handles were frequently incorporated to secure the barrel and facilitate transport.

Authentic period mortars feature cast-iron barrels showing natural surface pitting and patina, along with hand-forged or cast brass hardware. The wooden carriage typically exhibits historical wear, tight grain structures, and period-correct joining methods such as square pins or brass screws.

A signal mortar serves as a striking focal point when displayed on a dark wood mantelpiece, a library bookshelf, or an executive office desk. Pairing it with antique leather-bound books or brass nautical instruments enhances a classic, curio-focused aesthetic.

The cast-iron barrel should be kept free from moisture and dusted with a dry, soft cloth, with an occasional light coat of microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation. The oak carriage can be preserved using a quality beeswax polish to nourish the wood and maintain its finish.
