Antique Tanns Defiance Luxury safe restored to showroom condition.
Originating from the renowned Defiance Safe & Lock Works at London Fields, London, N.E., this safe was crafted during the late-Victorian period (c.1880). John Tann is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious safe makers in the world, renowned for pioneering heavy steel plate, fire- and burglar-resisting safes. This fully restored piece is a unique collector's item, offering an unparalleled blend of security, history, and exquisite luxury finish, now offered in genuinely magnificent, museum-quality condition.

This bespoke luxury safe has been fully restored from bare metal, having been stripped and linished to ensure the highest quality refurbishment possible. The exterior features a rich, subtle metallic Royal Blue finish bordered by a sleek Black frame, which is beautifully accented by intricate gold pinstripe coachwork and corner flourishes across the door, top, and sides. The entire safe has been hand-polished and waxed to protect the paintwork and provide a deep, high-gloss sheen, with all external brasswork meticulously polished to a mirror finish.

The safe is instantly identified and authenticated by its pristine, highly polished original brass plaque, proudly displaying the Royal Coat of Arms alongside "Tann's Defiance, Lock & Safe Works, London Fields, London". It retains its original solid polished brass handle which operates the heavy locking bolts with a smooth, precise, and satisfying action reminiscent of a fine bolt-action mechanism. The primary lock has been fully serviced and works effortlessly with two keys provided. The keyhole is protected by its original, ornate lift-up brass escutcheon to keep the keyway free from dust and debris.

Opening the heavy door reveals a clean, bright interior finished in a crisp off-white, proudly displaying its central gold "Tann's Defiance Safe & Lock Works, London N.E." trade mark decal on the inside of the door casing. The internal layout is intelligently configured with a vertical central divider creating a tall side compartment alongside a lower secure drawer and upper shelf space. The removable, locking metal drawer features elegant gold hand-pinstriped detailing, its original stamped brass keyhole plate, and its original brass double-drop carrying handle stamped with the maker's name. The drawer lock has been fully serviced and comes complete with two working keys. To complement the interior, our upholstery team has custom-crafted three tailored, off-white full-grain leather removable liners to line the compartments and drawer, protecting your delicate valuables from scratches. To ensure complete visibility across the divided interior, we have fitted two automatic motion-sensing LED lights to illuminate both sides of the chamber upon opening; both feature long-life lithium-ion batteries that recharge easily via USB.

To enhance its presence and practicality, we have hand-crafted a bespoke Pine plinth for the safe, finished in a distinctive black washed Pine stain. This base protects your flooring while elevating the safe to an ideal lamp table height, preventing accidental damage from vacuum cleaners or foot traffic.

This John Tann safe is a magnificent statement piece for any home, office, or retail setting, offering real historical weight alongside security and timeless craftsmanship. It is ideal for storing important documents, house deeds, passports, cash, or fine jewellery. The safe is also available without the plinth should you not require it.
