Early Georgian Adjustable Walnut Candlestand

18th century
For Sale by Carse Antiques
Description

Early Georgian, probably George 1st / 2nd red walnut adjustable candlestand in pretty decent condition. Typical early design base with squat cabriole legs. Square column with internal ratchet mechanism for adjusting the height including the original brass fittings. The top is dished with original bearers and block underneath. There are a couple of very minor old repairs and the square internal stem needs to be re-glued to the block as it is a bit loose (this can be done here if required). The table is a nice colour with waxed finish. You don't see these early adjustable candlestands very often now.

SIZE; 17" diameter top. Height when fully closed is 26". Can adjust to approx. 40" in height.

CIRCA; 1730 - 1740

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early eighteenth century, candlestands were small, portable tables crafted specifically to elevate beeswax or tallow candles, maximizing light distribution throughout a room. Their height-adjustable mechanisms allowed users to position illumination precisely where needed for reading, writing, or social gathering.

Early Georgian examples were predominantly constructed from solid native timber such as walnut or mahogany. Traditional cabinetmaking techniques included hand-carved tripod legs, turned or squared central shafts with wooden ratchet mechanisms, and turned tops with raised dish edges to catch dripping wax.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven surface wear, natural timber shrinkage across the grain of the circular top, and historical oxidisation on the underside. Original joinery typically displays hand-cut dovetails or peg construction, while the adjustable mechanism will show evidence of long-term mechanical friction.

A period candlestand functions effectively as an accent or side table beside an armchair or sofa. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for tight alcoves, reading nooks, or beside a bed to hold small contemporary lighting or decorative ceramics.

Maintain walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a pure beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Position the item away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement, warping, and uneven fading.
