Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gateleg tables originated in England during the sixteenth century as space-saving dining solutions. Their popular use continued through the Jacobean and Georgian periods, characterised by hinged legs that swing out like gates to support collapsible table leaves.

Historically, gateleg tables were constructed from solid English hardwoods such as oak or walnut. Craftsmen utilised pegged mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned legs, and heavy iron or wooden rule-joint hinges to ensure structural stability.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand construction, including irregular wooden pegs, hand-planed timber surfaces, and natural wear patterns on the stretchers from foot placement. Oxidisation around original iron fittings and uneven patination on the oak top also indicate genuine age.

A gateleg dining table can be integrated into contemporary dining spaces or open-plan living areas by pairing it with contrasting modern chairs. Leaving one leaf dropped allows it to serve as a side table or console when full dining capacity is not required.

Preserve the finish by applying a quality beeswax polish along the grain several times a year. Avoid placing hot items or liquids directly onto the timber surface, and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent warping or splitting of the oak boards.
