This First World War military periscope dates from 1910 and forms a distinctive piece of trench equipment. Made from warm brass with a polished finish, the cylindrical tube houses an optical eyepiece and includes a stamped brass casing bearing the maker inscription "PERISCOPE MK IX 1918 R. & J. BECK LTD. NO 2310". The metal displays slight surface wear and minor patination around the joints. Measuring 58 cm in length with an eyepiece height of approximately 8.5 cm, it weighs 0.6 kg and features a removable handle that unscrews. In a contemporary home, this object serves as a display piece suitable for an office desk or a gentleman's library bookcase. It rests securely on flat surfaces to add historical character to a study collection or an industrial interior scheme.

Trench periscopes were optical instruments designed to allow soldiers to observe enemy positions safely from beneath the parapet of a trench without exposing themselves to sniper fire.

These instruments were typically constructed from solid brass tubing and housings for durability and precision, fitted with internal glass mirrors or prisms and protective lacquered finishes.

Authentic examples often feature engraved maker stamps, broad arrow ordnance marks, model designations such as Mark IX, and production dates stamped directly into the metal casing.

A brass optical instrument makes a distinct accent piece when displayed on an executive desk, positioned on a bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or placed inside a glass cabinet.

To preserve the natural aged patina, avoid aggressive chemical polishes and dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, cleaning glass optics gently with specialised lens solutions.
