Andreas de Jong Ltd. has dated these Satinwood Demi Lune Tables to the 18th Century.
Dating to circa 1780, displaying all the refinement and delicacy associated with the finest late eighteenth-century decorative furniture.
The demi-lune tops are beautifully figured and richly coloured, each centred by an inlaid classical urn with a large inlaid bow , from which finely executed grapevines emerge and sweep gracefully to either side. The scrolling vines, laden with bunches of grapes and finely detailed foliage, create a balanced and sophisticated composition across the surface, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of the period.
The friezes are equally decorative, centred by an elegant stylised honeysuckle motif, a favourite neoclassical ornament of the era. Delicate scrolling tendrils extend from the central honeysuckle in symmetrical fashion.
The tops are supported by slender, tapering satinwood legs of exceptional colour and rich patination. Each leg is elegantly adorned with finely inlaid bellflower trails that descend from the upper sections.
Positioned above each leg is a beautifully executed inlaid urn motif. A fluted panel separates the urn from the upper section of the leg, creating a harmonious visual link between the decorative elements of the tops, friezes, and supports.
Particularly noteworthy is the wonderful mellow colour and lustrous surface that has developed over more than two centuries, Furthermore the use of grape fines in marquetry tops is very unusual.
Perhaps most importantly, these tables survive as a true pair, a rarity that greatly enhances both their desirability and decorative appeal. Combining elegant neoclassical ornament, exquisite inlay work, superb colour and highly practical proportions, they represent a particularly attractive example of furniture from the height of the George III period.
