Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Bedside Night Table Cupboard

18th century
Description

An Extremely Good Quality Georgian 18th Century Chippendale Period Mahogany Bedside Night Table, Or Pot Cupboard, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top With Elegant Shaped Gallery Incorporating Attractive Pierced Handles, Above Open Storage Compartment, Raised On Elegant Rounded Square Chamfered Legs.

Bedside cupboards, or pot cupboards as they are sometimes known, are among the most practical and versatile forms of 18th century antique furniture.

Surviving examples dating from the Chippendale period are much rarer than their later Georgian and Victorian counterparts, particularly when they retain such elegant proportions and detailing as this one. The shaped gallery is both decorative and practical, whilst the mahogany timber has developed a wonderfully rich colour and surface over the 200 plus years of its existence.

A great example of its type it remains in very good original condition with a desirable colour and surface, indeed it has clearly been well loved and looked after throughout its lifetime.

Wonderfully versatile, this piece is equally at home serving its original purpose as a bedside cupboard or as a compact lamp table, side table or occasional table elsewhere in the home. Its understated elegance allows it to complement both period and contemporary interiors with ease.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this Georgian bedside cupboard has been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers and is ready to be placed into the home immediately.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century England, Georgian night cupboards were designed as practical bedside furniture, often featuring raised gallery tops and open compartments or enclosed cupboards to house washing utensils and chamber items.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or fine mahogany veneers, featuring hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery alongside solid pine or oak drawer linings and back panels.

Authentic 18th-century examples exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, irregular dovetail joints, hand-carved gallery cutouts, and natural oxidisation on the mahogany framing and underside.

Position the table alongside an upholstered bed frame, pairing the dark timber tones with contemporary brass lighting and neutral ceramic accessories to create balanced contrast.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually to preserve the patination.
