This large Japanese Meiji period jardiniere originates from the late 19th Century and takes the form of a heavily potted round ceramic vessel. The piece employs white porcelain finished in a bright cobalt underglaze with a glossy glaze. The exterior displays dense hand-painted blue and white decoration, featuring a broad everted rim with a continuous geometric border, a sub-rim lattice band, and intricate scenes of exotic flowering plants and birds across the swelling body. A smaller repeating panel border encircles the lower base just above the unglazed foot rim. Measuring 47 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 63 cm deep, the jardiniere offers substantial presence for interior placement. The vessel serves well as an ornamental planter positioned directly on a fireplace hearth or placed within a sunlit conservatory to house large indoor houseplants. Its durable ceramic construction allows for practical utility in traditional or botanical-themed reception rooms and garden rooms.

A Japanese blue and white jardiniere is a decorative ceramic vessel produced primarily during the Meiji period for indoor plants or ornamental display. These pieces were crafted using underglaze cobalt blue painting techniques on fine porcelain, frequently exported to European markets during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These items were thrown from high-grade porcelain clay and decorated using cobalt oxide pigment applied directly to the unglazed body. A clear glaze was applied over the decoration prior to firing at high temperatures, creating a durable, glossy finish.

Authentic Meiji porcelain often features hand-painted underglaze cobalt motifs showing subtle variations in tone, visible potting lines on the interior, unglazed foot rims, and characteristic wear or natural crazing consistent with age.

Place a large jardiniere on a parquet floor, hearth, or side table, incorporating indoor foliage such as palms or ferns to contrast with the detailed ceramic patterns. It can also function as a standalone decorative centrepiece.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. If displaying live plants, use an internal plastic liner to protect the interior porcelain glaze from soil staining or water moisture.
