Pearlware is a refined earthenware body developed in Staffordshire during the late eighteenth century, distinguished by a cobalt-tinted lead glaze that produces a cool white surface finish, frequently decorated with hand-painted enamel colours.

These figures were hand-pressed into multi-part earthenware moulds, assembled with slip, and fired before lead glazes and hand-painted enamel decoration were applied prior to a secondary firing.
