Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th-century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III Revival triple pillar dining table is a late 19th or early 20th-century piece crafted in the style of 18th-century English furniture. It utilizes three central turned pedestals with splayed legs rather than corner legs, providing unobstructed legroom and allowing for significant extension via leaf inserts.

Tables from this period were predominantly constructed using solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers over secondary timbers like pine or oak. Hardware such as brass caps, castors, and table forks or clips were used to secure sections together.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished undersides, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-cut dovetail joints on structural frames, and consistent age-related patina on the wood finish.

Balance the substantial proportions and dark wood of the table by pairing it with streamlined contemporary dining chairs or upholstered seats, placing a minimalist pendant light above, and anchoring the arrangement on a subtle modern rug.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration. Clean surfaces with a soft dry cloth, use felt mats under hot or moist objects, and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to nourish the finish.
