Chinese Canton Painted Enamel-on-copper Bowl, Guangxu Period, C.1885-1905

A fine antique Chinese Canton enamel-on-copper bowl dating to the Guangxu period of the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1885–1905. The scalloped body is entirely hand-painted in the distinctive Famille Noire style with a dense, continuous Millefleurs design of peonies, chrysanthemums and lilies, demonstrating the refined decorative taste of late nineteenth-century Canton export enamels.
 
The contrasting white enamel interior is decorated with the traditional Three Abundances (Sanduo) motif of a pomegranate, peach and Buddha''s Hand citron, symbols of fertility, longevity and prosperity in Chinese culture. The composition is enclosed by an elegant red-and-gold geometric diaper border.
 
Produced by firing successive vitreous enamel layers onto a hand-hammered copper body, this unmarked bowl displays the quality and craftsmanship associated with Canton workshops supplying luxury goods for the European export market.
