This eighteenth century Chinese smoking pipe originates from the Qing Dynasty and takes the form of an elongated tobacco pipe carved from dark brown bamboo. The object integrates natural bamboo nodes along its curved stem and terminates in a narrow wooden mouthpiece. The bowl section features figurative hand-carvings portraying a human figure with hands held to the face, complemented by a round metal bowl liner and a decorative fluted collar. A dark, aged patina covers the entire surface alongside natural wood grain variations and minor surface wear. The piece measures 19 cm wide and 4.5 cm deep. Display this smoking pipe on a bookshelf or within a gentleman's library collection as a cabinet curiosity. The compact proportions allow placement among books, inside glass display cabinets, or atop a desktop surface. This utilitarian artifact functions as an ornamental decorative accessory when styled in a study or library setting.

Smoking pipes crafted from bamboo root and stalk became prominent during the Qing Dynasty in China. They served both functional purposes and as decorative personal items, often carved by artisans with figurative scenes, motifs, or scholars symbols reflecting Chinese folklore.

These pipes were primarily crafted using dense bamboo roots or stalks due to their heat resistance and natural grain. Metal liners, often copper or brass, were commonly fitted inside the pipe bowl to protect the carved bamboo from direct flame during use.

Authentic period examples display natural surface wear, a rich dark patina from decades of handling, and slight surface oxidisation inside the metal bowl. Carving marks should show manual tool work rather than clean modern machine cuts.

Architectural and decorative pipes are frequently styled as sculptural curiosities on acrylic display stands, layered within bookshelf vignettes, or placed alongside leather-bound volumes inside a study.

Bamboo objects require a stable humidity level to prevent the natural wood fibres from drying out and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft dry brush and keep the item away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
