Early 20th Century Italian Green Painted Drop-leaf Table

1900 - 1920
Description

Charming Early 20th-Century Painted Italian Drop-Leaf Table, Circa 1920

A delightful Tuscan painted drop-leaf table, dating from the early 20th century and retaining its original decorative finish. The hand painted top is adorned with scrolling foliate and floral motifs in warm green, pink and yellow tones, creating a soft, romantic palette with wonderful character.

The shaped end leaves fold down to form a neat, compact console, and open to provide a generous oval surface ideal for dining or display. The paint surface shows attractive craquelure and an honest age patina throughout.

A single frieze drawer to each side, each with a simple wooden knob, offers useful storage, while the understated trestle-style base ensures sturdy support without detracting from the decorative top.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian painted furniture developed through local artisanal traditions, combining practical space-saving drop-leaf mechanisms with hand-painted floral and foliate motifs during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These tables are typically constructed from regional softwoods or hardwoods, prepared with a gesso base, and decorated with hand-applied paints before being sealed with varnish.

Look for genuine surface craquelure, authentic wear on high-touch edges, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and period-appropriate drawer construction.

Position the table with leaves folded down against a wall as a narrow hallway console, or open in a living area as an accent table paired with neutral contemporary seating.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excess humidity to prevent the painted surface from flaking.
