This Victorian library table dates to 1880 in the distinctive style of James Shoolbred & Co. London. Formed in warm brown oak, it has an octagonal top inset with a green leather writing surface, complemented by carved frieze drawers, brass pulls, turned legs, and an X-stretcher. The timber shows rich grain patterns, while the drawer fronts display intricate floral carvings and the edge features a textured gadrooned moulding with rounded ball feet beneath the legs. Measuring 79 cm high by 121 cm wide and 122 cm deep, the table provides a substantial work surface and practical storage. It suits a traditional study, home office, or reading room as a centrepiece writing desk or library table.

A Victorian library table is a substantial piece of furniture designed during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) for study, reading, and administrative work. These tables typically feature solid timber construction, integrated drawers, robust turned legs, and often an inset leather writing surface.

Victorian craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. Writing surfaces were commonly lined with gold-tooled leather, skiver, or baize, complemented by cast brass handles and iron drawer locks.

Authentic pieces display period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetail joints, stamped brass locks or makers marks, and natural wear to the timber and feet. High-end makers like James Shoolbred & Co. often stamped individual drawer edges or metalwork with registration numbers or company insignias.

An antique library table can serve as a central focus in a modern home office, study, or open-plan living space. Pair the warm oak tones with minimalist modern lighting and understated seating to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually along the wood grain. Protect the leather insert from direct sunlight and excess moisture, treating it periodically with a specialist leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking.
