Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese ceramic export ware originating from the Arita region in the former Hizen Province. Named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped, this style developed during the 17th century and gained widespread international recognition for its distinctive colour palette.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-grade kaolin clay fired at elevated temperatures to produce durable porcelain. The decoration traditionally features underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze enamels, predominantly iron red, occasionally highlighted with gilded detailing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit slight hand-painted variations, subtle glaze imperfections, and firing spur marks on the underside base. Examining the surface reveals hand-brushed enamel work rather than uniform modern transfer printing.
