Very rare, 19th century Grand Tour Siena marble model of a lidded sarcophagus casket in the manner of Roman originals (see the 4th Century sarcophagus in the British Museum number 1853,0620.1 and the Octagonal Gallery in the Vatican Museums). Fine quality, delicately carved strigil design to all sides with a central roundel clipeus relief of the head of Medusa to the front and back. Each corner has an upright panel of delicately carved stylised anthemion motifs. Small ball feet with foliate decoration. Low rectangular pyramidical lid with classsical motifed edge.
