Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Grand Tour marble sarcophagus casket is a small decorative stone container crafted in Italy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These items were purchased by wealthy European aristocrats as souvenirs while travelling to study classical antiquity.

These caskets were primarily carved from various indigenous Italian marbles, such as Giallo di Siena (Siena marble), Rosso Antico, or Nero Marquina. The sections were hand-chiselled, fitted, and polished using lapidary techniques.

Authentic pieces feature natural stone veining, hand-carved classical details such as Medusa heads or strigilated fluting, and slight hand-tool irregularities. They typically display natural surface patina and subtle wear around edges and feet.

Place the marble casket as a singular accent piece on a mantelpiece, an office desk, or atop a stack of art books on a sideboard. The warm stone tones contrast effectively against both dark wood panelling and contemporary neutral backgrounds.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent dirt buildup in carved recesses. Avoid acidic chemical cleaners, water immersion, or harsh polishes, applying only a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax if conservation buffing is required.
