Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian side table originates from the Kashmiri region and comes in two parts comprising a collapsible base and a separate top. The piece is constructed from wood with a black lacquer finish decorated with an intricate floral naqashi pattern in gold, red and green paint. The octagonal top features dense central floral roundels surrounded by geometric borders, while the folding base consists of four matching supports pierced with mihrab arches. Measuring 52 cm high by 51 cm wide and 51 cm deep, this side table serves as an accent piece in a living room, positioned easily at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to display decorative objects.

FAQs

Kashmiri painted furniture originated from the rich papier-mache and wood-lacquer traditions of Kashmir, heavily influenced by Persian artisans who introduced delicate floral motifs, known as naqashi, during the fifteenth century.

These tables are typically constructed from local woods such as walnut or pine, often incorporating papier-mache layers, coated with lacquer, and meticulously hand-painted with mineral pigments and gilded highlights.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted, dense floral or botanical patterns with fine brushwork, subtle crackle or variations in the lacquer surface, and traditional joinery such as collapsible, arch-shaped folding legs.

Position the table as an accent piece in a quiet corner, beside a neutral sofa, or within an eclectic reading nook to allow the intricate floral patterns and gold leaf accents to stand out without overwhelming the room.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and keep the piece away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and harsh chemical cleaners to prevent cracking or fading of the lacquer and hand-painted pigments.
