19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

Of Yorkshire interest ~ A scarce and interesting framed Pair of Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian woven silk bookmarkers, here attributed to Thomas Stevens of Coventry who, at a time of disastrous recession in the traditional silk ribbon industry, succeeded in adapting the Jacquard loom to produce small multi-coloured silk pictures of infinite variety, selling his first woven silk bookmarker in 1862. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Stevengraphs are Jacquard-woven silk pictures and bookmarks manufactured by Thomas Stevens in Coventry during the late nineteenth century. These items were produced to commemorate historical events, architectural landmarks, notable figures, and sentimental themes.

These bookmarks were crafted using silk threads woven on specialized Jacquard looms to create detailed monochrome or polychrome images and typography. They were frequently mounted on paper card backings or framed under glass for protection.

Authentic Stevengraphs typically feature the woven signature or mark of Thomas Stevens of Coventry along the border or lower trade label. The dense texture of Jacquard silk weaving and period-appropriate typography distinguish original Victorian examples from later reproductions.

Framed silk bookmarks fit well within gallery wall arrangements, narrow hallway spaces, or displayed on bookshelf ledges alongside historical literature. Grouping multiple woven textile artworks together creates a cohesive visual display in traditional or eclectic interiors.

Antique silk artwork should be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and fiber degradation. Utilizing UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials helps preserve woven silk fibers over extended periods.
