English Miniature Desk Globe on Ebony Stand, Circa 1930

1920 - 1940
Description

A charming and highly decorative English miniature desk globe dating to around 1930. Beautifully proportioned, this tactile piece is both an attractive display object and an appealing collector's item.

The globe is crafted from wood, with the natural grain now subtly visible beneath the printed paper gores due to age-related shrinkage of the timber, adding to its authentic period character. The map is traditionally constructed from individually shaped paper segments, carefully hand laid and glued onto the wooden sphere.

Mounted on an elegantly hand-turned solid ebony stand, the globe rotates smoothly on its axis via a metal support rod secured with a solid brass retaining cap and screw. The ebony has developed attractive natural shrinkage to the grain over time, further enhancing its aged patina. The underside of the base is neatly stamped "Real Ebony".

The globe remains in good antique condition, displaying the expected age related wear and patina consistent with its age and use.

English, circa 1930

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature desk globes became popular decorative items in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, serving as compact educational tools and refined study accessories. These small-scale terrestrial models were designed for personal desks and private libraries, capturing contemporary geographic knowledge in portable form.

Traditional miniature globes feature printed paper gores pasted onto a plaster or papier-mache sphere. The sphere is mounted onto a central axis and set upon a turned wooden base, often finished in ebonised timber, oak, or mahogany with a top metal finial.

Authentic 1930s globes can be identified by interwar political boundary markings, including vintage place names and period geopolitical labels. Additionally, aged paper patination, hand-applied gore seams, and turned turned timber pedestals help confirm period manufacture.

A miniature globe functions as a classic accent piece when placed on an office desk, curated within open bookshelf styling, or arranged alongside leather-bound books on a sideboard top. Its compact scale allows it to fit neatly into vignette displays without overwhelming surrounding decor.

To preserve paper gores and wooden bases, keep the globe away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking and fading. Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or liquid chemical solvents.
