This is a nineteenth-century English pole screen in the William IV style, functioning as an adjustable fireside heat reflector made from mahogany, textile, and brass. The dark brown timber finish displays a deep russet hue, paired with a vibrant red floral needlepoint panel set inside a carved scrollwork frame with a turned finial at the top. The screen stands 151 cm high, 50.5 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. The piece rests upon a spiral-turned barley twist column above a tripod base with scrolled feet, showing signs of an aged patina across the solid construction. Positioned near a fireplace alcove in an English country house interior, the adjustable height mechanism allows for practical use in managing hearth heat or displaying the needlework panel.

Developed in the eighteenth century and widely used through the nineteenth century, pole screens were designed to protect sitters faces from the intense heat of open hearth fires while preventing wax makeup from melting.

These screens were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring adjustable brass fittings and hand-embroidered silk or wool needlepoint panels.

Authentic William IV pieces feature heavy, robust proportions, bold carvings such as lotus leaves or barley twist turnings, hand-stitched period textiles, and functional brass sliding mechanisms on the central pole.

A pole screen functions as a decorative sculpture when positioned alongside a modern hearth, within a reading nook, or as a focal accent in a hallway or library.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight and intense heat sources to prevent textile fading and wood drying. Clean the timber with natural beeswax and gently vacuum the needlework using a soft brush attachment under low suction.
