Pair of Antique English Georgian Brass Chimney Horses / Door Porters

19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

This thoroughbred Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Brass Chimney Horses really are representative of the best of the breed, their gleaming coats and lifelike modelling capturing as it does the spirit of these fine animals. Standing upon moulded rectangular bases, these pieces are often mistaken for doorstops, for which purpose they today will of course typically be used, being ideal for that purpose. Their true original purpose was to stand, as decorative ornaments, on either hearth or mantelshelf, a tribute to those noble creatures which played such an important and prominent role in everyday life in days gone by. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, it has been suggested that their stance was inspired by the Quadriga which stood on the loggia of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, whence they were reinstated following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815.

Each Horse ~ Height ~ 26.00 cm. / 10.23 inches ~ Width ~ 31.00 cm. / 12.20 inches ~ Depth ~ 10.00 cm. / 3.93 inches ~ Weight ~ 5.00 Kg / 11.02 lbs ~ Year ~ Circa 1825

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chimney horses, also known as hearth horses or door porters, are decorative heavy brass ornaments originally created to adorn Victorian and Georgian hearths or to hold heavy interior doors open.

Traditional pieces were sand-cast in solid brass, often featuring hollowed-out reverse sides or weighted bases to maintain structural stability and reduce raw material usage while preserving visual weight.

Authentic period examples usually display hand-chased surface details, visible seam lines from two-part casting moulds, and natural wear or dark oxidisation in unpolished crevices.

These items function effectively when placed symmetrically on a hearth, positioned at the base of an entrance door, or used as heavy bookends on library shelving units.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a specialized brass polish sparingly if a high shine is required, taking care to avoid abrasive tools that scratch the metal.
