This late 19th-century antique Quimper French faience dish is shaped as an oval tin-glazed earthenware serving dish with a cream glaze, a scalloped rim, and a hand-painted botanical border in blue, green, and rust colours. The surface features a hand-painted figure of a Breton woman standing and facing right while holding a posy of flowers, accompanied by floral motifs and the text Pornic. The piece displays a glossy white tin-glazed finish with hand-painted polychrome decoration in shades of blue, green, and rust, enclosed by a thin dark line outlining the scalloped rim and a flat base resting surface. The dimensions are 24 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Position this ceramic dish on a sideboard top in a dining room or kitchen to add a touch of French country style to the interior. It functions effectively as a decorative serving dish or display piece on flat surfaces within domestic spaces. The unglazed base rim shows standard historic wear consistent with nineteenth-century earthenware items of this type.

Quimper and Pornic faience refer to tin-glazed earthenware ceramics produced in Brittany, France. Originating in the late seventeenth century, this regional style is characteristically decorated by hand with folk art motifs, including Breton figures in traditional attire, floral sprigs, and geometric borders.

Faience ceramics are crafted from refined clay that is fired into terracotta before being dipped in an opaque white tin glaze. Artisans paint decorative designs directly onto the unfired or dried glaze before a final firing, fusing the pigments seamlessly into the surface.

Authentic pieces feature hand-painted brushwork showing slight variations in line weight, factory or painter marks on the base, and characteristic tin-glaze texture. Age indicators often include fine glaze crazing, slight rim wear, and historical regional inscriptions such as location names or artist initials.

These decorative ceramic pieces work well when displayed on plate stands atop sideboards, arranged in gallery wall groupings, or positioned inside glass-fronted dressers. The vibrant hand-painted colours add texture and visual interest to modern country or eclectic interiors.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking tin-glazed ceramics, using harsh chemical cleaners, or placing items in a dishwasher, as moisture penetration can compromise older glazes and lead to degradation.
