Description

Large George III Mahogany Tilt-Top Dining or Breakfast Table, c.1780–1800

A large and well-proportioned George III period mahogany tilt-top dining or breakfast table, dating to the late 18th century, circa 1780–1800. The oblong top is formed from well-figured solid mahogany boards and finished with a finely worked thumb-moulded edge, displaying a pleasing colour and mature patina developed over more than two centuries.

The top is fitted with a traditional Georgian tilt mechanism with brass locking catch, allowing the table to be stored upright when not in use. The table stands on a ring-turned pedestal above a well-drawn base of four reeded and gently swept legs, each terminating in original brass lion’s paw caps and castors.

A handsome and practical Georgian table of confident proportions, typical of good quality late 18th century English cabinetmaking. The generous size comfortably accommodates six people and works equally well as a dining or breakfast table.

This large George III period mahogany tilt-top dining or breakfast table dates from the late 18th century between 1780 and 1800. Executed in solid mahogany, the timber displays a warm brown colour and mature patina with a finely worked thumb-moulded edge along the oblong top. The construction includes a traditional Georgian tilt mechanism fitted with a brass locking catch, a ring-turned pedestal column, and four reeded, splayed legs terminating in brass lion's paw castors. Measuring 72 cm high, 144 cm wide and 101 cm deep, the generous proportions comfortably accommodate six people. Practical for daily use in a modern dining room or kitchen, the table stores upright when not in use thanks to the tilting mechanism. The structural design suits traditional and country house interiors equally well, serving as a functional surface for family meals or social gatherings while retaining authentic period character through its original hardware and well-drawn base.

Originating in the 18th century, a tilt-top breakfast table features a top hinged onto a central pedestal base, allowing the surface to be rotated vertically when not in use to save space in multi-purpose Georgian reception rooms.

Tables from this period were primarily constructed from solid mahogany, prized for its strength, dense grain, and rich colour. Secondary timbers often included oak or pine, while hardware typically featured solid brass castors and metal latches.

Authentic George III pieces demonstrate hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail joints beneath the top frame, and original iron or brass catch mechanisms. Look for age-appropriate wear around the pedestal base, feet, and brass castors.

A Georgian pedestal table serves as a focal point in a contemporary dining room surrounded by modern upholstered chairs. When folded upright against a wall, it functions as a sculptural architectural display piece.

Keep mahogany away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments to prevent wood movement and splitting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the natural patina.
