K0662 Fine quality Jas Shoolbred figured and solid walnut coat stand, having five original double hooks in brass on revolving top adorned with a finial, raised on three fluted supports with further three hooks and a finial terminating in a fluted circular base, all standing on shaped legs. The base is fitted with an original lead ring for the stability and the coat stand is also design to lean back for a counter balance. Stamp with Jas Shoolbred 8242.
This antique coat stand has been sympathetically restored, it retains its original finish which has been cleaned, revived and waxed, original deep colour and good patina. Showing some age commensurate marks. This fine quality hall stand would sit perfectly in a corner, it would add style to an antique or modern interior. Truly timeless design. c1900

In the 1870’s the company was designing and producing original, high-quality furniture, inspired by the aesthetic qualities of E.W. Godwin’s architecture. The furniture was sold in-store and also featured in the James Shoolbred & Co catalogue, which was circulated outside of London. Within another decade the company expanded and moved into a larger location in London, becoming one of the first department stores. James Shoolbred furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside the textiles, carpets and lamps that the company also sold, creating an example interior design for customers to view.
