Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Folding screens originated in ancient China before becoming highly fashionable in 17th and 18th-century Europe, where craftsmen in France and Italy adapted the form with local artistic motifs, such as floral arrangements and pastoral scenes.

Traditional European screens typically feature a lightweight wooden framework supporting stretched canvas or paper panels, secured with metal hinges and hand-painted using distemper or oil-based pigments.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the wood, hand-forged or early brass hinges, the craquelure and medium of the hand-painted canvas, and construction markers consistent with period joinery.

An antique screen can function as a striking focal point against a neutral wall, act as a subtle room divider in an open-plan space, or be positioned to zone a seating area.

Preservation involves keeping the screen away from direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking of the canvas, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding liquid cleaners.
